Undergraduate (Bachelor) Degree
Although all English Majors are expected to fulfill the same core requirements, our
curriculum builds in enough elective work to allow you to focus on technical writing,
creative writing, literary studies, or cultural and interdisciplinary work.

The English Program Offers Courses in all areas of English Studies, with students
completing work in five required areas:
Literary Studies
Introductory and advanced courses that focus on established and innovative methods
of analyzing literary sources, ranging from medieval to modern. From game studies
and cognitive science to ecocriticism, the faculty stress the interdisciplinary nature
of literature and its value after graduation.听

Technical and Scientific Writing
Introductory and advanced courses that range from usability and digital writing to
the rhetoric of scientific discourse and technical presentations and writing. Offering
opportunities to practice write, edit, and publish in a variety of forums from popular
culture to science, from business to advertising, and from government to industry.听

- Internship opportunities to write grants and work with off-campus clients as part
of the Usability Lab
The new certificate in Professional and Creative Writing offers students an opportunity
to bring their harness their creative talents as they prepare for the careers of today

Creative Writing
Introductory and advanced writing workshops provide students with instruction in composition
and revision of their own fiction and poetry through careful group critiques. Courses
prepare students for graduate studies in creative writing and studies in contemporary
literature.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
Introductory and advanced courses centered on Louisiana's rich cultural heritage and
the peoples and identities who helped to create that heritage. With an emphasis too
on global cultures and texts, courses in this category also focus on Postcolonial
literatures and Multicultural Literature, among others.听

- Opportunity to complete coursework for tourism and culture employment
Interdisciplinary
Introductory and advanced courses in grammar, the History of the English Language,
linguistics, rhetoric, and literary theory, showcasing the wide range of approaches
available for texts and analysis in English Studies.
